Mar 21, 2022 · If I remember correctly in dark souls 2 backstepping was viable because it actually gave iframes. You can make the argument that its a spacing tool or whatever but that doesnt really make sense since a roll not only achieves pretty much the same effect but does it in a much safer manner as well. This is especially true in pvp since latency makes any and all attempts to space with backstepping ... It looks similar to pressing back and dodge like in sekiro but since elden ring still uses rolls I think it's the backstep itself. In dark souls 2 the backstep was slightly shorter than dodging so having the I frames was used heavily in pvp to line up perfectly times parries.

I think every game should go by Bloodborne philosophy of dodging. Except you couldn’t be as quick in heavier armor. Quickstep has more iframes than roll and roll has more iframes than BB sidestep so it's not entirely bb philosophy, also ER quickstep was nerfed and now it has a follow up in form of backstep attack.

I have noticed when you're blocking and use backstep, you dont lose your block and can negate damage with your shield throughout the entire animation. But I cant figure out the timing for i-frames on the backstep Does backstep while blocking give you any i-frames?
