I have a 99 grand cherokee that would shut off at very inappropriate times my problem was in the electrical plugs under the hood on the passenger side rear firewall. Remove battery neg cable and coolant overflow tank and you will see the 3 plug terminals.Step 2 - Check radiator and fan. The efficiency of the radiator and electric cooling fan can be greatly reduced by mud, dirt and debris and also lead to engine overheating. Check the radiator cap, make sure it is screwed on all the way. It could have also gone bad or perhaps it has the wrong pressure rating and is releasing pressure (coolant) at too low of a pressure. The radiator cap should have an 18 lb. pressure rating.
