Same issue with my 05 Xterra. While I agree the VDC has nothing to do with dying, I'm having similar missfiring, shutting down and running again. The VDC is also lighting up occasionally as this occurs. Replaced both CPS sensors with Nissan ones. The new design by them is these are metal and not black plastic as prior.

The P0420 code means there is an issuie with the catalytic converter on bank 1. This can cause stalling, but in most cases won't. The simplest thing to do is to take it back to the dealer.
