The serial number is AEM65xx. Any help/info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!! The Combat Masterpiece was actually introduced in the 1950/51 timeframe, but it was not designated the Model 15 until 1957 when S&W introduced model numbers for its entire product line. Before that the models just had names. A Combat Masterpiece produced before the Model 15 designation was applied can be called a Pre-15.Obtained a S&W N frame Model 58, 4" blue fixed sight .41 Magnum pinned & recessed today. No box etc. and the grips are the larger target type N frame Smith grips. Other than that, the gun appears un-fired and in factory new condition every way as described in the book. On some models they would also put the serial number on the frame, cylinder, and sometimes on the grips, but varied by model. Sometimes there was really no rhyme nor reason to what S&W did/does.Many people look in the yoke cutout and provide the numbers found there. Except on relatively new guns, this usually is not the serial number and is unhelpful in identifying the handgun. Prior to WWII, S&W revolvers had no letter in front of the serial number. The 2 inch model 10 was made in a square grip and a round grip. The round grip is best for carry, but the square grip fits my hand better for shooting.
